Symbolism

Shield. The colors gold, red, and blue point to Senior Chief Douglas Denman's family history and his lineage to the state of Georgia. The totem pole highlights both his heroic service during the attack on the USS COLHOUN during the Guadalcanal campaign and the cutter's homeport. The Purple Heart honors Senior Chief Denman for remaining on duty and transporting injured comrades from the sinking USS COLHOUN, despite receiving facial injuries from two direct hits on his Higgins Boat. The Silver Star commemorates Senior Chief Denman's actions of rescuing overboard shipmates. The two anchors are taken from Senior Chief Denman's specialty rating as a coxswain and his retirement as a boatswain senior chief petty officer. The eagle, salmon, and the Big Dipper constellation represent the cutter's homeport in Alaska. The mountain range is based on the Sitka mountain range, a geological landmark of the cutter’s homeport. Furthermore, Alaska's harsh and cold environment alludes to Senior Chief Denman's grit to survive and help his comrades in the face of imminent danger while injured.

Crest.  The green dragon points to the nickname of the USS COLHOUN, the “Green Dragon.”  Moreover, the dragon rising out of the waves illustrates the living legacy of the ship.

Supporters.  The two golden tridents honor the 50 crewmembers who perished during the attack on Guadalcanal.  Additionally, the tridents embody the maritime authority of the cutter’s current crew in the Pacific Northern waters.

Motto:  “THE GRIT OF THE NORTH.”

Seal.  The coat of arms as blazoned in full color on a circular white background, enclosed by a dark blue border edged along the outside with a gold rope, inscribed “USCGC DOUGLAS DENMAN” above and “WPC 1149” below in gold.
